Reflective Wrap-Up Post

I currently am employed at a childcare center. In the classroom that I work in we have integrated the use of technology in the classroom with having a smart-board, a computer, three nabi tablets, and a classroom monitor. The smart-board in the classroom can be used for videos, music, lesson plans, just about anything. It allows us to be able to show things to the class as a whole and the children have access to the smart board as well under supervision. The computer in the classroom can be used for teachers when it comes to creating and working on lesson plans. The children also have access to the computer to go on sites such as Coolmath, Poptropica, National Geographic Kids, and PBS Kids. The three nabi tablets have variety of interactive games that the children can play. The classroom monitor allows parents to sign in and sign out their children. For the older children, who come during the after school program some may have iPads provided from their schools and they are allowed to use those to complete homework and work on school assignments. The time frame for each child on these depends on what it's being utilized for.

The age group of children I work with is from the ages five to twelve years old. Some issues that I've faced in the classroom with technology is with that sometimes being all that a child will want to do. They would just want to be on the nabi tablet or on a computer instead of doing something else. In order to help with this issue, having hands on activities going on during the day has helped. Open ended activities where the children are engaged and able to explore. We also have light tables in our classroom which are recently new, which has been something very engaging. For children who want to use the smart-board having an engaging large motor activity such as Go Noodle has helped as well. An issue parents might face at home with technology is with their child wanting to have access to a tablet or iPad during dinner, or not wanting to go to bed because they would like to stay up and watch TV. Student's do not have access to personal technology from home in order for us to avoid the issue of cyber-bullying, and inappropriate videos, it can be hard to monitor what every child is doing if they brought in their own devices. The children who have access to iPad's are the older friends who go to school and it's their school's personal devices.

I haven't faced any issues with incorporating technology from this course due to the fact of me already working in a classroom that utilizes technology. I grew up with the use of technology. I learned all my times tables and long division through an interactive math CD on my computer. Some things I am wary of with children using technology is how easily it can be to get through parental blocks, cyber-bullying and getting addicted to too much technology use. Technology does have lots of benefits though and I do believe it's a great thing to have incorporated inside a classroom, it has helped me as teacher.

Pinterest in the Classroom

1. What I learned from this Pinterest activity was I never knew before on how to pin things to my Pinterest board from other websites. I've used Pinterest for about three years and only thought I could include things that were directly on the site. It was very neat to learn how to do that on other websites as well.
2. I believe that I will utilize Pinterest as a teacher with helping me with designs for my classroom, finding fun learning activities for my classroom, and just learning new ways on how to incorporate different things into the class.
3. The strengths of Pinterest are is there is a vast amount of things you can search for. You can look for classroom management, organization hacks, calm box ideas, home decor, kitchen designs, the lists are endless when it comes to finding something on Pinterest.
4. The challenges of Pinterest I think would be because there is so many different things it can make things a little harder for some teachers. You might get so caught up in being a "Pinterest Teacher" that you lose track of the true point of Pinterest and what your doing.
5. The feedback I would give for utlizing Pinterest would be to use it as much as you can. I have found so many ideas and neat things on there. I believe it's very helpful.

Khan/Koller Review

1. Salman Khan Interview.
             1. As I explored the Khan Academy website I really liked the way everything was set up. It's very user friendly and easy to find exactly what you are looking for.  There is such a broad amount of topics and things for you to chose from. I can defiantly envision myself using this website.
             2. I do believe this is something I would encourage my students in my class to use. They give you the opportunity to even practice questions on the lessons that your learning on. Which is a great tool and it also gives you the chance to take a unit test to test your knowledge from the entire unit to see what you've learned.
           3. I do believe that after viewing a couple of the videos on Khan Academy that they are easy to follow and learn from. One video about punctuation I found was intriguing due to the two teachers talking in the video making the video fun, and easy to follow. Another video I noticed the same thing, that it was very easy to take notes and follow along with what was being taught.

2. Daphne Koeller
           1.  After exploring the Coursera website the course that looks the most interesting to me is Psychology.
           2. No, they don't have a partnership with Columbus State.
            3.  I believe that I would say that Coursera is more challenging than others I've experienced before. I would have to say this because I find it hard sometimes to focus on just one thing and there seems to be so much that goes on with each topic, that I found it a bit hard to concentrate
            4. Yes I do think that massive online courses are  a wave of the future. I feel like it would affect a student like me in a way where I don't have that much flexibility in my time, having an online course where I can work at my own pace is helpful.

Exploring Standards-Based Lesson Plans

The grade level for this lesson plan is K-2 ( ages 5-8). The subject area is science with a time frame of 50 minutes. The lesson objective states, " Students identify objects that can be observed with their senses and write sentences to support their choices."

The Common Core Standards for this lesson plan were College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Language (K-5): Standard 6- Acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases. Sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level; demonstrate Independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when encountering an unknown term important to comprehension or expression.  College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Writing: Standard 4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the developmental organization, and style are appropriate to task, propose, and audience.  Standard 6. Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.

One of the way this lesson meets the standards is in Standard 6 it talks about the use of technology and the Internet. When completing this lesson plan children will open up the website on their tablets or some other kind of electronic device. Which uses technology. Another way that children are meeting these standards is that by completing this assignment they have to write example of each sense, which involves Standard 4.  A final example I have of how this lesson plan ties into the use of the standards is that the students get the chance to answer the teachers questions about what they know about each sense.

How I would implement this in my classroom is I would include it in part of my science center in the after school program. This would be great way to tie science with the use of technology into the center at the same time. I believe a part that would pose a problem would be the older children not having that much of an interest in the activity due to this being for an age group of 5-8 years old. In order to help with this problem, I would tweak and change some things in this lesson plan. I would create one that would be more suited for the older children, for them to have an interest in.

DL School Choices

The DL option that I would pick for my child would be OHDELA! First off, their website is very user friendly, welcoming and catching. It's set up in a way which I found was helpful but also not so boring too look at. The very first thing that grabbed my attention was that children have the opportunity to make friends with their peers. Families and children get the chance to even have in person meets through OHDELA field trips and family days. They offer interactive software and live class sessions. The program is set up in a way where it works best to suit the needs of the individual child so that can succeed educationally and personally. I really liked the fact that they offer College Credit Plus which gives the chance for students to earn high school and college credits at the same time by taking courses at local community colleges and universities. National Honor Society is available as well, just like how it is in the schools. Also they offer independent study as an option where the student can work with an academic advisor to create an independent study for course credit.

The DL Option that I would not pick for my child would be the Ohio Virtual Academy. The very first thing that I noticed when I was on their website was that it wasn't attention grabbing for me. The subjects that I found that were offered were art, music, world languages, AP courses, honors, and numerous electives. I liked the fact that world languages and numerous electives were offered but I just wanted some more courses as well to have been added onto that list. Another thing that I wish was offered was the field trip and family days that are offered at OHDELA.

Teacher Blogs

1. Educational Technology Guy

The reason that I decided to chose this as one of the teacher blogs was because of the very first topic that I saw on his page which was titled, " 4 Factors to Consider When Debating Cell Phones in Schools - Guest Post." Scrolling down the blog I found different topics such as social media and kids, organization and productivity tips, and google education practices. The one that I have chosen to write about would have to be the one that grabbed my attention write away. In this post, he broke down the four different factors of the cell phone use. One of them was the role of tech for education.  One thing he said was a benefit of the cell phone usage was how school can be one of the best places to teach about technology management skills. A downside can be how some sources have linked that overexposure can be linked to insomnia and depression. Second one said time saved and spent which mentioned how cell phones can help aid in accessibility for students with disabilities who are unable to take notes, could take pictures of slides. The third one said content which talked about how use of content can have beneficial factors in the classroom, while also having negative effects. The final one talked about social connection.  An example was how children having access to their cell phones allows families to be able to reach out to their children faster. It also can have a negative impact by opening the doors to cyber bullying.

2.  EDTech Focus on K-12

One of the reasons why I chose this teacher blog to write about is because the website is very well put together. They have the different topics categorized in a way that makes exactly what you're looking for easy to find. I chose to read the entry that said, " 4 Ways Esports Improves K-12 Skills."  The first one said better spatial attention, an example used was a fast paced action game could be more beneficial for quick decision making. The second one was enhanced problem solving which mentioned how gamers spend time failing they have to figure out new strategies. The third one said practice, patience, and perseverance and the final one was increased physical activity.

3. Dangerously Irrelevant

I chose this teacher blog because of the title. I was curious on why someone would name their blog, " Dangerously Irrelevant" and what their blog could be about. His most recent entry is a podcast about " Moving from digital substitution to deeper learning. His blog talks a lot about innovation and about embracing our different ideas.

Welcome to my Blog

My name is Michelle Lomotey. I was born on July 20, 1997. I attend Columbus State Community College, with my major in Early Childhood Education. I will be graduating from the program in the Summer of August 2019. I'm currently employed at a Childcare Center in Hilliard, Ohio as an After School Coordinator. I work with preschool age children all the way up to 5th grade. I didn't always know that I wanted to work with children. For the longest time I wanted to be a writer.  There's something about putting your thoughts on paper, and then typing them out that's so beautiful and relaxing to me. Writing is one of my favorite things to do when I get the chance. My favorite sports to watch are basketball and football. I'm currently in a book club with a group of my coworkers and we just started the new Nicholas Sparks books, which has been really good so far.

When it comes to my goals as an educator, it's pretty simple. I want to be able to make a difference in children's lives. I don't want to just teach them, but I want to help instill good values and morals in them that they will hold onto in their future. I want to help reinforce creativity in each child that I get the chance to interact with. As an educator, I believe my job is to help each child that comes into my classroom to be the absolute best that they can be. To believe in themselves, no matter what the odds are.
